Furniture and Packaging Design Concept
can we design furniture with innovative materials that considers the product’s full life cycle?
with a focus on sustainability, design for manufacturing and assembly
Research
When researching materials, we looked into what processes are involved to acquire and create them, as well as compared them on qualities such as:
surface finish (matte, satin, gloss)
tactile texture
resistance to heat, moisture, UV, scratches, chemicals
sustainability (biodegradable, recyclable, compostable)
strength, durability, flexibility
weight and density
We decided to use ocean plastic and newspaper wood for the shelves because they repurpose existing matter. Newspaper wood has a matte finish and can be cut, milled and sanded like regular wood. Ocean plastic is available in a variety of colors and transparencies. We chose recycled anodized aluminum for its light weight and its resistance to corrosion and abrasion, and natural rubber for its strength and resistance to cutting or tearing. All materials were chosen based on their longevity and ability to be repurposed or decompose.
Packaging
Materials for packing include a cardboard box lined with mycelium blocks to keep the parts in place during shipping. Mycelium is a sustainable alternative to plastic or styrofoam. It is made of organic living matter grown in an airtight mold to fit a custom shape. After use, it is able to be composted without chemicals.
